Who we are

The Digital Education Emergency Relief Initiative is a multinational collaborative with the mission of providing access to critical education and socio-emotional relief for displaced Ukrainian children as a result of war, political unrest and natural disasters.

DEERI provides these supports to those affected by leveraging technology, tools and most importantly our volunteers. Our team then is comprised of ALL volunteers that work in education, human services, healthcare, philanthropy and technology.

All members of our core volunteer team have direct experience working with displaced refugees from Syria, Afghanistan and Yemen. Members of our team have either worked with or at the Inter-American Development Bank, European Bank for Reconstruction & Development, UNESCO, IRC and The US State Department. DEERI’s headquarters is located in Washington DC.

Refugees didn’t just escape a place. They had to escape a thousand memories until they’d put enough time and distance between them and their misery to wake to a better day.

Call-To-Action

Hardware Donors

Laptops including Chromebooks or tablets

Displaced children either have no access or limited access to a device which is usually their mother’s phone. The situation is much more grim for children who cannot find family members, especially those 12 and younger. These children now lack access to any form of media and are missing other critical resources for learning.

Software Donors

LMS, K-9 and K-12 language arts, science and math curriculum

While most of Europe’s response has been incredibly generous in providing education aid, access to these critical resources is limited. In the interim, DEERI will provide these resources to ensure these children can continue to make progress with their grade level objectives. Many displaced parents have already said they do not want to see any further interruptions to their children’s already compounding learning losses.

Support Services

Virtual Interactive Tutoring and Social-Emotional Supports

DEERI has partnered with some of the leading tutoring and socio-emotional learning companies. However, with 4.2 million displaced children, these service providers do not have the capacity to serve all needs. Therefore, we are seeking additional organizations that can aid with this part of are response.

Logistics Fund

Shipping costs from the United States to Poland

The logistics fund has been established to assist with all donated hardware shipping costs. Depending upon the hardware donor, shipping costs may or may not be covered to our central distribution center. From the central distribution center, all hardware will be transferred to the host country. We are normally able to obtain assistance from the host country in order to transfer hardware to its final destination.

General Fund

All other general and administrative costs

The general fund has been established to support several items. First, all hardware donated must be evaluated and sanitized prior to shipping the units overseas.  Following this, hardware must be packaged properly for the transfer to the host country. Second, some of DEERI’s volunteers in the United States will be traveling to various host countries. As a result, travel assistance for staff is provided if volunteers need support. Finally, the general fund helps cover other general and administrative costs such as web design, web hosting, printing and storage space if needed for hardware.

“The opportunity to learn, even online, is very important for them, because that’s how they hear each other again with their peers. That’s how they are psychologically rehabilitated.” They hear their teachers, share who is experiencing what,”

Trauma may not show right away,” says Heather Macey, who led the IRC’s initial response in Poland. But then you go to a [refugee] reception center, and there’s silence. The children are not playing. That’s not normal.
